Câlnic fortress was founded by the counts of Kelling (the German name of the village) in the second half of the 13th century. The building has been preserved in very good condition and is located in the center of the village with the same name.

Câlnic Fortress is an imprint of German colonists settled in Transilvania. The construction has several windows of different shapes . Inside the chapel there is a wooden stand dated to 1733, leaning inwards on two pillars carved in oak and painted with floral motifs. The chapel also preserves fragments of frescoes from the early 16th century .

Today, the tower houses on two levels a museum of folk and medieval art collections. They include valuable art objects (icons painted on glass or wood, ceramics, furniture and traditional costumes, carpets and textiles, objects of worship, engravings), some of which are very old. In the basement there is an exhibition revealing also the craft of wine-culture, tools and objects related to wine-culture, especially impressive for visitors being the oak barrels of high-capacity (6,000 liters) of this noble cellar. This part of the museum is in close connection with the fame of the wines at Calnic, known since the Middle Ages.
