Transalpina, known as the King’s Road, crosses Parâng Mountains through the Rânca of Gorj resort, links Transylvania and Oltenia and is the highest road in Romania reaching an altitude of 2,145 m in Urdele pass.

The beginnings of this road are unclear. Some sources claim it was first built by the Roman legions during the Dacian wars, which is why on the history maps it is mentioned as “the IVth strategic Roman corridor”.

According to other sources, the road was built and paved by the Germans during the First World War, for military reasons, but was used very little.

Transalpina was rebuilt during the interwar period and opened in 1935, when it was inaugurated by King Carol IInd, which is why it is also called “King’s Road”

The road had been rehabilitated during the Second World War, when the Germans needed this access route for military reasons.
