Ciucaș Lake is situated in Băile Tușnad (Tușnad Baths), the so-called smallest town in Romania, in Harghita county. The lake, though it is named after a mountain massif in the southern part of the Eastern Carpathians, geographically, has no connection with it. The lake is an artificial one.

The lake is situated right in the center of the spa resort and was created during the period 1882-1893, being supplied with water from the Olt river. In 1920, inside the resort, an outdoor swimming pool called the Bath of the Poor was arranged. Tușnad Baths resort was developed due to the volcanic and post-volcanic active phenomena, by the emanations of CO2 and mineral water, based on which various therapeutic treatments were practiced.
