The summer palace of the Baron Samuel von Brukenthal (1721-1803), governor of Transylvania, was built between 1780 and 1785 after the Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna. The baroque style building is U-shaped, having a central body and two lateral wings. Here was exposed the well-known collection of Baron Brukenthal consisting of 212 paintings and 129 etchings, currently found only in Brukenthal Museum. The Palace had also one of the most beautiful parks, organized in terraces descending to the Olt River meadow. The area of ​​over 20 hectares was designed on the model of French gardens, artesian fountains, a splendid staircase and several side alleys, vases, benches, stone statues and an orangery, in which they cultivated date trees, almond trees, nutmeg, melons and pineapple. In the Dutch part, they cultivated a luxuriant variety of flowers, spices and vegetables and in the English garden a landscape with large meadows, isolated trees and groups of trees was performed.
