Bazna comes from the Saxon “bessen” meaning “better”, place that was previously searched by any community in order to build a fortress-church, around which the entire village then develops. The best place is usually located on top of a hill. Why? Because it was easier to defense and harder to be sieged, because due to its position, it imposed safety and prestige. The fortress was a visible landmark from a large distance, being illuminated at night with torches. It was a true land light tower that often saved the lives of lost travellers. The height of a hill may represent an advantage … the rainwater collects waste outside the fortress walls, sometimes in a circular ditch, deep and wide, a new obstacle in front of the invaders.
